Research

New research on music, speech and interaction - when two people conversing agree with each other, their voices tend to converge in pitch; and, conversely, when they disagree their voices tend to diverge in pitch. That is: agreement is literally harmonious, and conflict is literally dissonant.

In an isolated world, humans need to dance together more than ever - but we’re running out of places to do it

Over the last 10 years, the UK has suffered a huge cultural loss. To some extent, it is part of the great shrinking of shared and collective space, which takes in everything from pubs and bars to community centres and libraries. But this particular change stands alone: a striking example of how something that was once thriving and important can hit the skids, and precious few people in positions of power and influence will even notice

Video: Bristol Burning: A sonic artwork about air pollution in Bristol. There are two layers to the track: one musical, one data-driven. Based on air quality sensor data from Open Data Bristol, the data-driven layer is realised as a drone noise representing levels of particulate (PM10) air pollution in Bristol from August 2021 to July 2022. The volume and filter cutoff of the drone is mapped to the monthly average particulate level.
